ANTIQUE PERSIAN RUG — GEOMETRY, COLOUR & TRIBAL CHARACTER
There is something unmistakably powerful about an old handwove rug. This beautiful piece immediately draws the eye with its deep red ground, repeating geometric medallions and richly layered borders.
The design is strongly associated with the Persian and Turkmen weaving traditions, particularly those of north-eastern Iran and the wider Central Asian region, where repeated octagonal motifs — often known as guls — became a defining decorative language. Similar geometric vocabularies can also be found across neighbouring Caucasian weaving traditions, which is why a precise regional attribution should always be made with care. What I especially love is the balance between structure and spontaneity. The repeated medallions give the composition rhythm, while the multiple borders, subtle irregularities and natural wear reveal the hand of the weaver and the history of the piece. The palette of deep reds, navy, cream and warm earthy tones gives it extraordinary versatility. It works beautifully in a classical interior, but can be equally striking in a more contemporary room, where its strong geometry and aged surface bring warmth, texture and character. It is more than a floor covering — it is a textile object with presence, craftsmanship and history. Antique handwoven Persian / Turkmen-style rug, probably from Iran or the wider Central Asian weaving tradition, with repeating geometric medallions and multiple decorative borders.€375,00
