This delicate dressed Saint, probably from the 19th century, arrived at Batalha Collection with the serenity of someone who has witnessed many prayers. The finely carved and polychrome wooden head and hands reveal a gentle face, a calm gaze and open arms in a welcoming gesture. The old dress, in original fabric, preserves floral embroidery and a sky-blue sash that falls down the front like a branch of faith. I am especially fond of the bare feet, resting humbly on the turned base, and of the patina of time visible in the silks and paints – signs of authenticity, life and history.
It is a piece of Iberian popular devotion, made to live in domestic shrines, but today it also works as a poetic sculpture in contemporary interiors. In my shop, I often place her at the centre, as if she were greeting everyone who comes in with a silent smile. She is not just an object: she is a presence, a memory of old prayers and homes filled with light.
