There are pieces that aren’t just old — they have presence. This magnificent Flemish oratory–Calvary, in polychrome wood, carries that quiet strength of objects made for daily devotion: painted doors like pages from a sacred book, and an interior that opens like a small theatre of faith, with the Crucified at the centre, the Virgin Mary and Saint John in contemplation, and the skull at the foot of the cross reminding us of human fragility… and hope.
When closed, the Annunciation scene is pure poetry: the angel with “AVE MARIA” unfurling in the air, light entering in golden rays, the dove of the Spirit hovering above, and Mary in an intimate, almost domestic gesture — as if eternity could fit inside a modest room. When opened, the side saints appear in paintings full of character, with heraldic shields above, a Gothic architectural frame holding everything together, and an honest patina that only time can write.
Flemish, 16th/17th century. Dimensions: 92 x 54 cm. A soulful piece — for a collector, for a chapel, or simply for someone who loves to live with history at home.
