There are pieces that start whispering stories the moment we hold them. This lidded jar, in fine Jingdezhen porcelain painted with silky famille-rose enamels, makes me smile every time I look at it. We see an elegant procession: dignitaries and young pages offering peaches of longevity and língzhī, beneath auspicious pines — symbols of long life, prosperity, and good fortune. The lid echoes the joy with lively scenes and a small zoomorphic finial, softly worn by time. On the sides, tiny molded ring-handles; on the reverse, poetic calligraphy that adds soul and balance.
I would date it to the late Qing / early Republic period (c. 1900–1930): the line is delicate, the palette creamy and luminous — pale pinks, gentle turquoises, warm oranges — that chromatic language I love and that lights up any room. It’s a jar that doesn’t shout: it enchants. A perfect auspicious gift for a happy home, or for a collection seeking sensitivity and narrative.
If you’d like, come see it in person at Batalha Collection, in Faro. You’ll understand why I fell in love with it. 💫🏮
