Some sets feel like they were meant to live in a home β and this trio of Portuguese jugs, numbered (1β2β3), has that rare harmony: milky white glaze with deep cobalt blue, generous silhouettes, and a calm presence that looks perfect on an antique chest of drawers, an entrance table, or a sideboard with history.
The motif is simply wonderful: an βMβ monogram beneath a star, framed by a laurel wreath and finished with a bow. Itβs decoration, yes β but also symbolism: triumph, memory, family, belonging. Hand-painted in blue, with the free, confident brushwork that only the 19th century can deliver.
In terms of style and manufacture, these are Portuguese faience pieces from the 19th century, presumably from the countryβs central region β Coimbra or Caldas da Rainha are two very plausible origins for this kind of popular yet elegant blue decoration.
Maker / workshop (context): these pieces belong to the world of Portuguese 19th-century faience workshops, where the traditional blue decoration was carried out by specialised painter-decorators, able to create monograms, borders and garlands with speed, rhythm and character β an artisanal know-how passed down through generations and deeply woven into Portuguese domestic taste.
