Some pieces take us back instantly โ to the old dining table, to the scent of a Sunday kitchen, to that moment when the tureen is placed at the centre like a small โthroneโ of the meal. This is one of those: Portuguese 19th-century faience, polychrome, with a rare sweetness in its colours and a beautifully familiar presence.
On the lid, the floral border โ deep blues and lively greens over a milky white โ feels almost hand-embroidered. On the body, a naรฏve and touching landscape: the tree, the house, the ground traced in simple brushstrokesโฆ like a painted memory, more emotion than drawing. And then there is that softened pink, the perfect โdust of timeโ tone that only truly lived pieces can carry.
The traces of use and age are there, honestly: small losses and wear on the rim and base, the right patina โ everything that cannot be faked and that, for me, is exactly where the soul lives.
About the maker / context: this tureen comes from the know-how of Portuguese faience masters of the 19th century โ workshop artisans, both rigorous and imaginative, who shaped everyday life with luminous glazes and popular decoration. It is a utilitarian object turned into domestic poetry, a direct heir to Portugalโs great faience tradition, where the table was also a form of art.
